About Jacqueline Cardenas (she/they)
Jacqui is a proud queer and non-binary Mexican-American who aspires to be a community driven reporter that challenges systems and propels meaningful change.
She is currently the lead editor and multimedia reporter overseeing California Latino News and Washington Latino News. Within months of taking on the role, her creative content has led to increased readership and viewership.
Throughout Jacqui’s journalism undergrad at Chicago’s DePaul University, she was the editor-in-chief of their bilingual newspaper, La DePaulia.
She led a team that untangled the stories of members of the Latino/a/e/x community that are not often highlighted in the mainstream media, including the experiences of those who are transgender, indigenous, Afro-Latino, immigrant and first-generation.
During her senior year, she fostered an educational partnership between La DePaulia and NBC Chicago, leaving an imprint on the school’s journalism program for future students.
Jacqui also interned for Block Club Chicago, a digital news outlet where she compassionately covered the effects of environmental injustice, local rallies, community meetings, the new wave of Venezuelan migrants arriving to the city and more.
Throughout her internship, she frequently contributed to the publication’s “Top 10 Most Read Stories” and helped Block Club Chicago reach wider audiences by creating engaging multimedia content for their social media platforms.
When she is not writing or overthinking about a story, she enjoys dancing around in her kitchen after a long day.
