About Jacqueline Cardenas
Jacqui is a proud queer Mexican-American who has challenged systems of oppression through her reporting in three major U.S. cities: Chicago, San Francisco and New York City.
She was the lead editor and multimedia reporter overseeing California Latino News and Washington Latino News. Within months of taking on the role, her creative content has led to increased readership and viewership.
Throughout Jacqui’s journalism undergrad at Chicago’s DePaul University, she was the editor-in-chief of their bilingual newspaper, La DePaulia.
She led a team that untangled the stories of members of the Latino/a/e/x community that are not often highlighted in the mainstream media, including the experiences of those who are transgender, indigenous, Afro-Latino, immigrant and first-generation.
Jacqui also interned for Block Club Chicago, where she compassionately covered the effects of environmental injustice, local rallies, community meetings, the new wave of Venezuelan migrants arriving to the city and more. She contributed to the publication’s “Top 10 Most Read Stories” and helped Block Club Chicago reach wider audiences by creating engaging multimedia content for their social media platforms.
She was awarded a full-ride to CUNY’s master bilingual journalism program and will attend this fall. She hopes to become an international politics reporter and travel the world touching people’s hearts with her words.
